Did you know that anyone can create a holiday?
Ok, so not a real holiday, right?
Well, yes, a real holiday. Just not an official holiday.
Here are my top 5 tips for creating your own holiday:
#1 – Decide on the reason for the holiday
Do you have an organization you want to support, a business with a cool product or service, a cause, a great food that isn’t already being celebrated, a fun happening, birthday, or meaningful purpose? Or perhaps you just had a silly idea or have a fun day you do with your friends and family that you want to share with the world.
#2 – Pick a name
The name can be simple with just the topic named (example: cheese day, sock day) or it can be something more fun (example: talk like Yoda day).
#3 – Add Your Story
Fun days do not need a story but it sure makes it more fun. Any inspiration around a daily holiday will create more sharing of the day across social media.
#4 – Showcase it on Your Website and Social Media Sites
If you have a business or personal website, add a page about the holiday your created. Or register a domain name and create a simple website just for your day. Then share across your social sites to get the word out.
#5 – Promote, promote, promote
Here are my top 3 websites to contact about your holiday to list your newly created holiday. Keep in mind, adding your holiday is at the integrity of the site. There are no guarantees and the ones that are free (listed below) are often not making enough money to make your holiday listing a priority. It helps to put out a press release about your day to get it in the media and make it more legitimate as most holiday sites want to see some authenticity.

Sites such as National Day Calendar charges money to add your day to their “National” Days. And they will automatically add the word National even if you do not want it.
So there you have it! You can create your own holiday just by doing it! And who knows, maybe by next year, your day will be celebrated all over the world!
